/headspin

about all i can add here is: i agree that "Hi" from "Hienrenkyaku" implies "En" or "Swallow" all by itself, especially in moves that seem likely to be connected. and "rengadan" is punches, not kicks, iirc...

Swallow... Blade, for hirenzan?

Semi-reviving this topic because I'm looking over the katakana spell names and my head has begun to shake over couple of them, despite recalling feeling satisfied with what we had down quite a while back.

#WRITE(ptr, $B7B40)
// FEF28
//スティングレイブ<END>

This was down as Sting Rave but there's... no way that's even right. It seems to me that this should be Sting Grave or Sting Glaive. To make it sound a little more natural, change Sting to Stinging. Now the hard part... for quite awhile now, I've hated using "Grave" as a translation of グレイブ, but have begrudgingly stuck with it in other projects due to Peter Garza insisting that's what it is. But Stinging Grave just reeks even more of Engrish than that. In this instance AT LEAST, I want to use Glaive...

It might actually be Sting Rave after all. The new Pirate class in RadiMai 2 seems to have a few "Rave" artes, and Sting Rave has to be romanized this way to fit with Serpent Rave (サーペントレイブ) and Shark Rave (シャークレイブ). The Sting Rave in this game is a physical attack, so it's completely different from Judas's spell. But both versions use the same katakana (スティングレイブ) so this might be a future consistency check, if RadiMai 2 is localized.

Of course you could ignore the Pirate version of Sting Rave since it is a different attack from a different game. I also happen to prefer the name Sting Glaive for the spell. But lately there have been a lot of spells that were converted into physical artes (Freeze Lancer, Ground Dasher, the generic Pikohan) or the other way around (Grand Chariot), and even if the physical versions have nothing to do with the spells, they still use the same kana.

Just curious, do the Sting Raves look similar?

Interesting to see physical and spells being blurred together, further support for what I've been thinking (woo).

I don't have access to the game yet, so I can't say what it looks like. I'm only going by what is confirmed for the arte lists on two JP wiki groups.

I doubt that they look the same. For all we know, Alfa System could have used "Sting Rave" without realizing that Judas's spell exists. Or they reused the name just because it sounds like it would fit a Pirate's moveset. I pointed out that recent trend just as something to consider.

The ToD2 version is consective spikes of rock attacking 4-5 times in close formation.  If you eat the first spike, you'll ride the rest of the tips/hits and keep on getting stunned until the spell resolves.

Been fooling around with some ToD2 stuff lately (and far from done doing so)

Could it be that Rave should be Lave?
Quote
lave
1  /leɪv/ Show Spelled Pronunciation [leyv] Show IPA verb, laved, lav⋅ing.
–verb (used with object)
1.    to wash; bathe.
2.    (of a river, sea, etc.) to flow along, against, or past; wash.
3.    Obsolete. to ladle; pour or dip with a ladle.
–verb (used without object)
4.    Archaic. to bathe.
(farfetched, yes, but I wouldn't exclude anything)

So you basically take a dip in stings, wash yourself with some good ol' pain.
(Or maybe it just is "rave", as in the meaning of a "swarm/many")

No idea what this thing looks like in both ToD2 and RM2, but mixing physical skills and spells like that wouldn't sound like a big impossible no-no in my book... +in the case of the RM2 pirate's skill... I wouldn't be amazed if they probably just thought it was funny that it almost sounds like stingray :/
