Ah!  I see now.  It was that 'according to her' bit that I was having trouble with.  I couldn't figure out how that fit in there and how it went together.

And I'm really having trouble with phrasing Kyoueisou...
魂に通ずるという「影」を貫く特技<END>
Pierces the shadow of the soul. Tokugi.

I want to put something like that, though doing so skips some of the description and isn't quite right.  Still, it's better than what I had.

I've been splitting the Tokugi bit off of the sentence, but I suppose really it's more a part of it like you've been doing.  Still, I'll just keep seperating it since that's how the Namco localizations usually end up looking.  You know like  "Attack Type: Description".

A sword is thrown at godspeed towards the enemy. Tokugi.
It can reach the enemy in the rear.

(eisenken)

something like...

A skill that fires a godly quick thrown blade that flickers with shadow.
The attack can reach enemies in the back, too.

?

you may want to load up ND3 or something and check out the ToD2 tokugi. you can't really tell what they do from the names, unlike the spells.

Yeah, that's not a bad idea.  Though I really haven't played ND3 for more than about 5 minutes, so unless I had a savegame to load, I really wouldn't be able to.  My biggest problem with the Tokugi is, like you said, not knowing what they do.  I might go ahead and leave the Tokugi alone for now and work on a different part of this list.  Probably best to leave this part of the translating to someone who knows the attacks a little better than I do.

Sexy!

I don't have time to look over too much today (weekends = free time), but I'd like to suggest Mix Master and Twinkle Star over Mixing Master and Twinkling Star as names of spells. At the very least, Mix Master, which is a common DJ term.

By the way.. one of Kongman's weapons in the ToD remake is named after the last Nine Inch Nails album: With Teeth. I mean, I guess it could be a coincidence, but that's a bizzare name for an item otherwise.

Oh, if you happen to be using an emulator, here's a save file (I used VBA, dunno if it matters) for ND3 that I cheated on to get both Judas and Leon, as well numerous other cheats. The important thing is that it has everyone with all their moves.

詠唱 - "aria" - this is spellcasting/chanting/whatever.
Is an 'aria' the specific name for ToD2 spellcasting?  Or is that used in other games?  I don't recall seeing it elsewhere, but I just thought I'd ask.

Feel free to correct what I post as much as you like.  I'm just trying to the best I can.  I really haven't touched ToD2, I'm just trying to do what I can to help.  Kind of hard without having seen the moves and used the menus and battle commands though...  In any case, thanks for correcting me where I'm wrong.

It's probably specific to the game, like fonons in Abyss.  The Swordians were destroyed in ToD so they probably made up a new word for the spells.  If I remember correctly, wasn't magic named something else in ToP?  Like shoujutsu or something.

In ToP magic was majutsu, healing or support magic was houjutsu, and summoning was shokanjutsu.  I believe majutsu is a pretty common Japanese term for magic.

shoujutsu (晶術) is destiny/destiny2's term for magic. they were called "spells" in US ToD PSX.

i'm referring to "aria" (詠唱) as such because dictionaries turn that up as a match for that combination of kanji. if you look at the individual kanji, the meaning is much more clear. it means "spellcasting/chanting". like, as in, chanting an incantation to activate a spell. like, for example, US dub morrison's infamous "come forth, thunder of the gods! indignation!" it refers to when someone is "charging up" with that colored field around them for a spell.

Yeah, when I used it, I did look up both the kanji together and individually.  In some places I did refer to spellcasting, but in others I left it as it was translated.  I wasn't sure whether or not 'aria' was an official ToD2 term or not.  Now I know.

I've begun to have this feeling that the all the summons besides the light and dark ones may simply be made up.

After going to wit's end trying to find something that works for アクアリムス, I've had enough. Rather than come up with some generic sounding english thing, let's just try to play along.

アクアリムス will be Aquarimus
シルフィスティア will be Sylphistia
フランブレイブ will remain Flambrave
アーステッパー is still somewhat undecided. Earthtepper, Earthteppa (I'm leaning on the latter myself...)

Begins with something logical, ends with something less so...

Ouch. the screen space limit for skill descriptions is brutal. 2 lines with 44 letter max each...

Good decision. And I'll second Earthteppa.

Cyllya predicts:
--Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World will reveal that Ratatosk was involved in ToS's last required scene in Heimdall.
--Tales of Vesperia's plot will involve space aliens in some way

It seems that I completely missed the point of the light summon, ソルブライト, when attempting to 'localize' it.

After reading a description of it from a Japanese Wiki, gogs and I have theorized the name could be a pun. Sol/Soul and Bright/Blight. The wiki description is:

光の精霊を召喚、凄まじい量の光弾を放った後、地面から光を爆発させて攻撃する。

Engrish Excite translation:

Light is exploded from ground after the spirits of the dead of light is summoned, and terrific amount of Hicatama is shot and it attacks it.

And the dilemma. If this is a pun, it seems like it would be pretty much impossible to translate. A happy medium would be nice at any rate.

I like Soul Bright best. gogs prefers Soul Blight. What do you like?
